I'm really curious. Does anyone know exactly what all these updates are on Windows XP? You know when you get a prompt that says windows update ready to install and you click install. It takes just a few seconds. But what exactly is it that they are installing? Are these virus patches maybe? I've always been curious since they never tell you. Anybody know?

I don't let the system install them. Instead, I go here

and I install them by hand. That way I can review what they do.

Same here. Do it manually. Lots of those non-critical updates are needless horseshit and then you're forced to reboot every time they install.
Do them by hand and in the weekend. In that case if it develops a conflict you have time to sort it out. (eg restore from backup)
