My first corporate job after grad school was at GM at their Research/Tech Center. On my first plant visit I observed a guy sleeping on the production line. I asked a senior engineer what the heck was that all about. He told me to ignore it as WE didn't want to get written up. I said "we"? He said "yeah, the union could file a grievance against us if we made a big deal out of it".

This kind of crap goes on at all of the Big 3. But given they were part of the UAW it was next to impossible for a union guy to lose his/her job. Maybe with Michigan now being a right to work state things will change in some ways for the positive.
