This is really a shocking incident that should be getting the attention that is being lavished on the Kurds. Unlike the continuation of centuries old middle eastern disputes, having a failed narco-state on our border is an obvious and massive threat to our national security.
Any rational policy would involve greatly stepped up border security and contingency plans if Mexico falls apart totally. So far, the cartels have been content to run the government from behind the scenes. There are lines that cannot be crossed however, and arresting El Chapo's son apparently was one of them. (We shouldn't be too smug, see Biden, Hunter.)
Stripped down to the basics, what happened here is there was an armed confrontation between the Mexican army and the cartels, and the government waved the white flag. Senior ministers were furious they had not been consulted beforehand, obviously fearing the loss of their cartel stipends.
In fairness, having the cartels control certain American cities, eg LA, SF, might actually result in better government and improved quality of life for the residents.
