Explains to a fair bit how they survived as long as they have, why they were in lawless lands due to the father and he probably helped a little bit to make Mexico as violent as it is. Maybe the Mexican government is not exactly too broken up about this sect being attacked. I don't know what the disposition of the current generation is however that will come out fairly soon.

Some of his wives worked, and others went on welfare, but they could never manage to make ends meet. Everyone, even young children, worked long hours in grueling conditions to ensure we didn’t starve. Even so, we regularly scavenged—or outright stole—to meet basic food and clothing needs.

Some of you disgust me. They burned babies alive in the SUVs they ambushed. So your reaction is to blame Mormons? they've got long running beef since '09 or so. These are long established communities, not like brand new ex-pats. Looks like they kept their activism going after their last brush w/the cartels back then. It's fucked, 'cuz these people are more Mexican than American really, and were just trying to make their home better for themselves and others.
That line of BS from the Mexican authorities saying it was crossfire between warring cartels was pretty laughable though.
