Memory question

The Best way to not have mem problems is regular maintance.
As a Trader it is utmost importance to have a reliable system that is running sweet.

Especially if you trade live like the nasdaq etc.

Learn how to ghost your system and regularly format and install the ghost back on (Ghost of your system is a image of your operating sytem drive). It only takes like 5 mins to reinstall.

Don't install a heap load of programs that you really don't need.
Run a Defrag program regularly to speed up performance.

Get used to doing these things and you will never have a problem.

Hey guys...I have two computers... one has win 2000 pro...the other has win 98. I am fed up with the crashes of the win 98 computer and the way it is handling my memory. I am not a computer whiz, but do get by doing things on my own. I have my disk for win 2000 for the one computer and was thinking about throwing it in the cd drive of the other computer and installing it. I have been hesitant to do it though. Any of you more astute guys got any advice? I am afraid I might screw everything up and that I am better off leaving things alone.

Vinigar,

Go for it! Make sure that you can trade on your existing win 2000 box and you have backed up all of your valuable data on the 98 box before you install. You never know what can go wrong.

Also, I would use the the FAT32 file system, not the NTFS system. I would reformat the old 98 drive. It's always good to start with a clean slate.

Thanks for the reply. I hear you when you say...reformat the hard drive and start with a clean slate...probably a wise idea....I'd rather not do that though because I have so much info that I would have to put back on manually...taxes, personal stuff etc....Do you think I could do that without to much trouble? If you think that reformatting the hard drive is that worth it ...then I will do that and try to put everything back on the drive ....files etc that I had.

Yes,

I would install the Win98 drive in the Win2000 machine and back everything up to the Win2000 machine. Check your PM.

vinigar, just do an upgrade, it will be fine.
in the rare case it's not (it does happen), then you will still be able to reformat and start over.

so no need to force format right away. just try the upgrade. all your settings will be saved. only some devices might be deactivated (it happened with my modem for instance, not recognized by W2000). but all the rest upgraded just fine.

W2000 is so much better than W98, it's almost ridiculous. Although, as I pointed out once I think, a well setup W98 is very stable. but that's a rare thing to achieve. Go Win2000
