Omicron was in Europe long before travel bans on southern Africa

Travel bans typically are
not used to stop the virus spread.
Instead, travel bans are used to
"slow the spread" so that government public health agencies can have time to alert the public and put up a proper defense to slow the virus spread while ensuring more people are vaccinated and giving people better access to antiviral therapeutic drug treatments to minimize deaths.
For example, the United States currently has no known cases of Omicron. Yet, we're only now testing travelers arriving at several key airports and then we've only recently begun doing genomic testing of 1 out of 7 known positive Covid infection cases of known Variants of Concern.
- That's a huge jump in genomic testing considering it use to be 1 out of 100 known positive Covid infection cases of known Variants of Concern.
Simply, we now have a better chance of identifying Omicron in the United States
or identifying a new Variant of Concern.
Also, it's now the start of the holiday season here in North America. People tend to not get tested when they only have
mild symptoms. Thus, if Omicron is here...it will be very difficult to detect until
after the holiday season.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprise if our public health agencies put more emphasis on our citizens / travelers to get tested even if they only have mild symptoms of illness.
