Meet the COVID Delta variant

Vaccines alone can’t stop the COVID-19 Delta variant: study

Vaccines are only the first step in stopping new coronavirus strains, a new study warns, adding that face masks and social distancing are also essential.

Researchers whose work was published Friday in Nature Scientific Reports have said they agree with updated guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which advises Americans to wear masks indoors and in crowded spaces — even if they are vaccinated against COVID-19.

Their study also urges non-vaccinated people to get the jab as quickly as possible. “A fast rate of vaccination decreases the probability of emergence of a resistant strain,” they wrote in their report, which used mathematical modeling and epidemiological understanding to make their ominous prediction.

“Counterintuitively, when a relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions” — such as face masks and social distancing — “happened at a time when most individuals of the population have already been vaccinated, the probability of emergence of a resistant strain was greatly increased,” they continued.

The findings support a new assessment by the CDC — via a leaked internal document — that the coronavirus Delta variant is just as virulent as chickenpox, even among some vaccinated individuals.

According to those reporting on the CDC’s leaked memo, scientists agree that vaccines “prevent more than 90 per cent of severe disease, but may be less effective at preventing infection or transmission.”

Simon Rella, a researcher at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria who worked on the study, told reporters that a vaccine-resistant strain has an “advantage over the original strain” when vaccinated people let their guard down.

“This means the vaccine resistant strain spreads through the population faster at a time when most people are vaccinated,” he added.

The institute’s Fyodor Kondrashov also explained how vaccine-resistant strains become more virulent than their predecessors.

“Generally, the more people are infected, the more the chances for vaccine resistance to emerge. So the more Delta is infectious, the more reason for concern,” he said

The study suggests that lawmakers should not lift all pandemic restrictions just yet.

“We have two tools in our toolbox to do this,” Kondrashov continued, referring to vaccines and face masks. “From an evolutionary perspective, what is necessary to reduce [the spread] is to vaccinate as many people as possible as fast as possible and across the globe.”

"We found that a fast rate of vaccination decreases the probability of emergence of a resistant strain," the team wrote.

CDC document warns Delta variant appears to spread as easily as chickenpox and cause more severe infection

"Counterintuitively, when a relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions happened at a time when most individuals of the population have already been vaccinated, the probability of emergence of a resistant strain was greatly increased," they added.

"Our results suggest that policymakers and individuals should consider maintaining non-pharmaceutical interventions and transmission-reducing behaviors throughout the entire vaccination period."

"When most people are vaccinated, the vaccine-resistant strain has an advantage over the original strain," Simon Rella of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, who worked on the study, told reporters.

"This means the vaccine resistant strain spreads through the population faster at a time when most people are vaccinated."

But if so-called non pharmaceutical interventions are maintained -- such as mask use and social distancing -- the virus is less likely to spread and change. "There is a chance to remove the vaccine resistant mutations from the population," Rella said.

The team used a mathematical model to predict these changes, but their findings follow what is known about the epidemiology of viruses and what's known as selective pressure -- the force that drives any organism to evolve.

The findings suggest that policymakers should resist the temptation to lift restrictions to celebrate or reward vaccination efforts.

This is likely to be especially true with a more transmissible variant such as the Delta variant, said Fyodor Kondrashov, also of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria.

"Generally, the more people are infected, the more the chances for vaccine resistance to emerge. So the more Delta is infectious, the more reason for concern," Kondrashov told reporters.

"By having a situation where you vaccinate everybody, a vaccine-resistant mutant actually gains a selective advantage."

On Tuesday, the US CDC altered its guidance on mask use. The CDC said earlier this year that fully vaccinated people are very safe from infection and can take off their masks in most situations.

Unvaccinated people are 'variant factories,' infectious diseases expert says

Now, it says even fully vaccinated people can sometimes catch the virus and if they catch the Delta variant, they are just as likely to infect someone else as an unvaccinated person would be. It advised everyone in areas of high or sustained virus transmission to wear masks when around others.

Many GOP politicians have derided the new advice. On Thursday, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves called it "foolish."

While the CDC was not thinking about the evolution of variants, Kondrashov said people skeptical of maintaining vigilance should be.

"The individual who already vaccinated and putting on a mask should not think this is pointless but should think that there is a vaccine resistant strain running around," he said.

"By preventing spread of vaccine resistant strains, you are preventing evolution of this virus," he added.

"We have two tools in our toolbox to do this. One is non pharmaceutical interventions such as mask wearing and the whole shebang, and the second is vaccines. From an evolutionary perspective, what is necessary to reduce this (spread) is to vaccinate as many people as possible as fast as possible and across the globe."

who could've seen this coming? Oh yeah:
it's even worse than that now that a vaccine is out. Anti-vaxxers facilitate the spread of vaccine resistant strains.

Vaccines are not 100% effective, so those who develop some antibodies, become ill and contagious but still pull through, have potential to spread a mutation that's survived the vaccine triggered antibodies. Said mutation may have changed enough to do damage to the next vaccinated person but this is exponentially exacerbated if you're surrounded by vectors who are not vaccinated. In other words, the potential spread of a vaccine resistant strain is worse among those w/zero antibodies, than those w/some antibodies.

similar to drug resistance, mutation until ineffective basically. If replication speed's increased, than that's clearly a sign of evolutionary shift. I don't know if vaccines can train our bodies to accelerate the rate by which we pump antibodies, as we received a dosage all at once.

PS: I'm also armchair playing doctor and inferring, this could all be incorrect.

This paper describes a few cases when it's happened. The main takeaway is that unlike drugs which are used post facto, vaccines are preventative, so the likelihood is reduced:

Of the 164 million vaccinated Americans, less than 0.1% have been infected with the coronavirus, and 0.001% have died, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Why it matters: While "breakthrough cases" have been getting some media attention, the low numbers show that the pandemic is mostly a threat for the unvaccinated population.
  • "[V]accination is the most important strategy to prevent severe illness and death," the CDC noted in a recent report.
  • Leaked CDC presentation slides showed that unpublished research indicated that the Delta variant causes more severe illness in unvaccinated people and spreads as easily as chickenpox.
By the numbers: More than 99% of those vaccinated have not been infected, per the CDC.
  • Only 0.004% have been hospitalized from the virus.
The big picture: More than half of the entire American population are not yet fully vaccinated, CDC data shows. Nationwide, the number of cases has been increasing since around late June.

will be curious to know long term effects & reopen/unmasked #s. For comparison, flu killed 49/100,000 in 2019 or .049%, so at this point, for vaxxed, "Just the Flu"

Delta spreads 'like wildfire' as doctors study whether it makes patients sicker
https://www.reuters.com/business/he...-whether-it-makes-patients-sicker-2021-08-02/

With a new wave of COVID-19 infections fueled by the Delta variant striking countries worldwide, disease experts are scrambling to learn whether the latest version of coronavirus is making people - mainly the unvaccinated - sicker than before.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that Delta, first identified in India and now dominant worldwide, is "likely more severe" than earlier versions of the virus, according to an internal report made public on Friday.

The agency cited research in Canada, Singapore and Scotland showing that people infected with the Delta variant were more likely to be hospitalized than patients earlier in the pandemic
.

In interviews with Reuters, disease experts said the three papers suggest a greater risk from the variant, but the study populations are limited and the findings have not yet been reviewed by outside experts. Doctors treating patients infected with Delta described a more rapid onset of COVID-19 symptoms, and in many regions an overall increase serious cases.

But the experts said more work is needed to compare outcomes among larger numbers of individuals in epidemiologic studies to sort out whether one variant causes more severe disease than another.

"It's difficult to pin down increase in severity and population bias," said Lawrence Young, a virologist at the UK's Warwick Medical School.

In addition, it is likely that the extraordinary rate of Delta transmission is also contributing to a greater number of severe cases arriving at hospitals, the experts said.

Delta is as contagious as chickenpox and far more contagious than the common cold or flu, according to the CDC report.

Shane Crotty, a virologist at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in San Diego, said the clearest indication that the variant may cause more severe disease comes from the Scotland study, which found that Delta roughly doubled the risk of hospitalization compared to an earlier version. read more

The majority of hospitalizations and deaths from coronavirus in the United States are occurring in people who have not been vaccinated. But there is evidence that the shots are less effective in people with compromised immune systems, including the elderly.

For vaccinated, otherwise healthy individuals, the odds are that if they contract COVID-19 they will only experience asymptomatic or mild disease, said Dr. Gregory Poland, infectious disease expert at the Mayo Clinic.

"But they can pass it on to family members and others who may not be so lucky," Poland said. "We have to be vaccinated and masked or we will, for the fourth time now, endure another surge and out of that will come worse variants."

'FULL-ON FLAMES'

The rate of severe illness, especially in regions where vaccination rates are low, is again straining healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic.

"This is like a wildfire, this is not a smoldering campfire. It is full-on flames right now," said Dr. Michelle Barron, senior medical director of infection prevention and control at Colorado's UCHealth.

Research from China suggesting that the Delta variant replicates much faster and generates 1,000 times more virus in the body compared to the original strain highlights the biggest danger of this new wave, Barron said.

"It is hard to tell if they are more sick because of the Delta variant or if they would have been more sick anyway," she said.

Other doctors said patients infected with Delta appear to become ill more quickly, and in some cases with more severe symptoms, than those they treated earlier in the pandemic.

"We are seeing more patients requiring oxygen sooner," said Dr. Benjamin Barlow, chief medical officer at American Family Care, a 28-state chain of urgent care clinics.

At his clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, Barlow said that around 20% of patients are testing positive for COVID-19, compared with 2-3% a few weeks ago. Patients are assessed at that time for potential hospital admission and oxygen support.

David Montefiori, director of the Laboratory for AIDS Vaccine Research and Development at Duke University Medical Center, said the Delta variant is more infectious and leads to faster onset of illness - particularly for the unvaccinated.

"Frankly there's a severity that comes from this variant that is a little more severe," Montefiori said on a webcast last week. "It's not just easier to transmit, it makes you sicker."

It’s Democrats, Biden admin’s border policies spreading COVID: Devine

Cheery Dr. Anthony Fauci was on television again Sunday warning us “things are going to get worse” with COVID-19.

It’s the Delta variant of the virus that is to blame for putting us back in masks, the nation’s top infectious disease expert told ABC’s Jonathan Karl.

Fauci didn’t mention all the other Greek letters of the alphabet lining up to do us harm. There’s always something.

Like the Lambda variant which apparently comes from, guess where? South America. This one is said to be worse than all the other letters.

So why the hell is the southern border wide open? In the middle of a pandemic?

On the one hand, the Biden administration is reimposing mask mandates and burdensome health restrictions we thought we had left behind. On the other hand, it is knowingly ushering in millions of illegal immigrants infected with COVID and not even testing them or keeping track of where they go. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has testified to that fact.

They are put on buses and planes and covertly shipped around the country to unsuspecting communities, in a violation of CDC guidelines the rest of us have to follow.
