Big Sister can fill us in on this. But I think if you work as a professional trader trading for your firm, and especially trading client's money, you cannot also trade your own account. It has a high potential of conflict of interest.

It is good though to trade in a firm, learn all the ropes, then when the time comes migrating to trading your own account.

It can be difficult to join a strong trend

I found a method that often works well: Enter via a buy stop or sell stop placed above/below a previous bar's high or low. For example, today's ES opening 5-min bar closes with a low of 1083.25 in a very clear pre-market downtrend, so place a sell stop @ at 1083.00 with your protective stop above the opening bar's high of 1086.50. Trailing a stop above each closed bar's high now keeps you in the trade until 1074.00. [/B]

NoDoji, This is indeed a great method. You sure have a way with words, you must be a virgo.

Matcha,
ND's method of entering a trend in progress is definitely worth putting in your "bullet pouch". If you trade one market, over time you will get to know it very well, you will learn your market's character. During a sustained trend a market will reveal unique reoccurring tradable opportunities time and time again. I like to test things to death. For instance, what is the average pull back into the previous bar? If the new bar makes a new low first what are the chances of a pull back into the previous bar? and how deep? And how far is "to deep"? Knowing the answers to these questions (and more) will give you the confidence to take the trade, every time.

PO, there are many days when the major trend is one way, but it's a trending range that you can enter both ways or the day provides a decent pivot at some point.

Today was a day where the stock index futures displayed almost no long invitations (I watch ES and assume the others may have been similar). At 10:40am ET, price broke through previous resistance and left a higher low behind. Not the highest probability trade, but aggressive bottom pickers might've jumped in and ended up with a scratch trade or a small scalp. Then at 1:30pm price broke through previous resistance AND closed for the first time above the 20-bar moving average on the 5-min chart. If strength followed that bar, you could consider it a possible trend reversal. However, the breakout failed right away and that was another short entry signal.

It can be difficult to join a strong trend, like the one that was in progress from pre-market through the half hour off the open. You may feel that price has gone too far and will reverse at any moment, trapping you. You look for long entries against a down trend because surely price has to reverse! So how do you join a strong trend that just isn't pulling back nicely?

Hi NoDoji,

Thank you very much for your time to point out the intricacies of trading the strong trending market. I like your method of "stopping" into a trade to join an ongoing strong trend. I will try that next time. I do like STOP orders to get into a trade. I look at today's chart, your method works great for the 5-min chart. 1, 2 and 3 min charts have too many gyrations to take advantage of the bar relays. It got stopped out too soon.

Thanks again for sharing your strategies.

I have to say today TRIN helped me stay out of the long trades. If I didn't look at it. I would have had this confusing moment again by looking at multiple time frame and then take long trades. Plus the market has been so bullish for so many days. The past 3 days. price is making channels-bear flag. So we had a bias in favor of long side.

For example: At 7:45PST, looks like market is reversing up. Price broke the micro trend line and started to form higher highs and higher lows. On 15 min chart. Price landed at the lower channel and started to reverse up. on 60 min chart. price is kissing "chinese wall" 200 MA, 200 MA could be a great support. Everything looks like it could be a "bottom" of the day. You had no idea how much I wanted to take long side of the trade. Plus the thinking of the market has come down so much. we are in a strong bull run etc.... I am not sure if you at that time are trying to go long. I looked at the reaction and really wanted to go long at that moment.

But TRIN is at more than 3.0 level. 20EMA and 100EMA on 5min is down so much. So I had to resist the "temptation"!

We should avoid the thinking " when market sells off so much, it's going to reverse". Market can do anything to us. Follow it's lead...

i hope from today, I don't screw up trend days anymore! I am still not taking very good advantage of the free money from market today...But at least it could be a great start....

Have a great weekend, PO! You will have a great week next week! No worries! We learned a lot from Boli, Nodoji and sis this week! I am very :p :D :D :D

Yes Matcha, I succumbed to the temptation at 7:45 PT to go LONG and didn't take a quick small profit and was eventually stopped out at a loss. :(

From now on, I need to be more mechanical and "military" in reacting to the one sided strong trend.

Thank you for the encouragement. I hope I will do better next week after a dismal trading this week.

I fully agree that by piggybacking on your journal I have learned a lot this week from you, Boli, NoDoji, and Sis! I, too, am very very :) :D :D :D

I am so jealous you can travel around so many places. It sounds so exciting! No, I haven't been to Xi An yet!

Enjoy your trip !

Sweetie.. one of these days you'll trade with the warriors when you're really and learned the "kungfu".

In the beginning, your priority will be building a solid foundation, strong principle of trading rules & TA & FA etc. You will be put on 'LIVE' driving a small car/account in some peaceful less traffic country road/less volatile stock market..when you're comfortable driving, you'll be given a medium-size car/mid-account to drive in a city.. when you're good driver/good trader..you will be given a big car/big account to drive/trade in a mega city/big market like Dow etc. Your Sifu is right! We provide you with the money but you can't trade your own account. Very hight potential of conflict of interest.

Thanks ... i know i will enjoy my Xi'an trip very much! :)

If my NYC schedule is not too hectic and if I can leave NYC earlier.. maybe i fly2 California & we can meet ..I do miss San Francisco and Sausalito

Hi Boli,
You and Big Sister are both the warriors and the pro. Lots to learn from for trading and to make deals. :) :)
Wow! You're not only a food connoisseur but very well traveled too.

Thanks PO. Travel is my leisure interest. I have been to more places in the USA than in China. Easier for me. Driving instead of flying. I figure that I probably have been to over 30 of the 50 states here.

In a few years I will be zig-zagging in the US continent in a RV and trading along the way.

My idol is Jim Rogers. "Retired" at 38 after co-founding Quantum Fund, he has traveled around the world in his motorcycle/2-seaters twice. Very inspiring.

My dream is to drive my custom RV around on the roads of Mainland China to zig-zag across the country. That would be awesome.

Let us know if you do.

Or on your flight home tell the airline pilot to just open up the side door to let you out parachuting down. Landmark: Golden Gate Bridge. You can land on Crissy Field. Piece of cake! (Like they show in all Hollywood movies...) :D
