Marijuana top U.S. cash crop, bigger than corn and wheat combined

Quote from Hydroblunt:
As I smoke my blunt, let me summarize the three main reasons/lobbying interests why marijuana is prohibited...

Big pharma —
Cotton industry —
Prison industry/military industrial complex —
F'n establishment.

agreed the price will go down. with it ever be worthless? of course not. Its possible that the crops will actually gain value when other avenues of use open due to legalization. Clothing etc al. How much is the cotton crop worth? and as you said its easier on the soil, unlike cotton.

I agree with you mostly. It would not be worthless but schwag (spelling?) would be a fraction of what it is today. Exotic strains would continue to command a premium. Let's be realistic though, it's a weed. It can be grown anywhere in the world easier than cotton or tobacco certainly.

Alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana. It has a fairly low lethal dose. No one has ever died immediately from smoking pot.

Big pharma and the lobby machine have a lock on hard drugs. Purdue Pharma and all the the others market opiates and codeine which are in essence synthetic heroin and cocaine. I was given Oxycodon for a short time for medical reasons and used it legally. I can see how people can become hooked. If there is a next time it will be weed and booze.

Quote from Guildenstern:

I keep on thinking of this 19 y.o. guy I knew two years ago that was adamant that it was easier for him to score cocaine than alcohol. Prohibition does not make sense considering how easy it is to score drugs. The ridiculous sums we spend on police enforcement and jail would be better spent on prevention and rehab. Drug enforcement just drives up the street price which creates an underground economy and spurs crime. Then you need to consider that a regulated drug trade would mean that drugs would be purer and thousands of lives would be saved annually. Sorry for rehashing the obvious.

Having a background originally in social work it really pisses me off when rapists and child sex offenders get out of jail/prison before drug dealers on mandatory minimums because of prison over crowding. The war on drugs has been a failure just like the war in Iraq. Don't get me started.

Sometimes the priorities of this country make wonder? You can't smoke weed, but get a prescription for Vicodin and no problem friend. Rush Limbaugh respected citizen busted with how many f-ing pills, my god. In closing prohibition on alcohol sure didn't work and it doesn't work on marijuana either. Ok now I feel better. Thanks for letting me vent! :D

Paper industry. It is cheaper to make paper from hemp than from wood.

The Constitution is written on hempmade paper....

Big pharma — Before any of you start talking crap how the big pharma would benefit from legalized marijuana, think again. They can charge a 10 times bigger markup on THC pills and THC substitutes due to R&D and patents. You cannot patent marijuana, let alone put much of a mark up on it due to the fact that it is one of the easiest plants to grow in any conditions. Little known trivia, Bayer used to sell and market heroin over a 100 years ago.

Cotton industry — The superiority of hemp to cotton is too much. Cotton industry would dwindle down due to serious competition. Think companies such as Monsanto and those giants, they have way too much invested in genetically modified cotton seeds, which are still inferior to the natural non-GMO hemp.

Prison industry/military industrial complex — This is the worst of all, complete corporate evil scum that makes money from locking up ppl, just or not. Yeah, California's three strikes was pushed through by lobbyists, courtesy of companies such as CXW.
Also, someone mentioned the "wasted" resources by the police, DEA, etc. It's not wasted, it's someone's profits. If drugs were decriminalized, at least half the police force would not be needed, let alone the bureuacratic institutions such as DEA. Lot of jobs at stake, lot of business also.

on the flip side other industries would flourish ( hemp made products, farming etc. ) and the government would stand to benefit from taxing it....

Furthermore...alot of adults I know are scared to have a glass of wine or two out at dinner with friends due to the hypervigilant DUI task force here. Hence, lots of professionals I know hitting the bowl now for a hit or two. And bring on those cheetos(or freetos and french onion dip)..:)

You know whats funny about this thread? Any other thread on ET you would have point makers, bashers, trolls, analysts, pikers and big swingers all in some form of disagreement.

As an eclectic a group as we have here everyone agrees that legalization is the right move.....yet it isn't legal.

Hydroblunt made the point I was trying to in the chitchat version of this topic. Big biz and state or federal politicians all want to keep themselves fat and happy with grants and contracts instead of letting the truth ring loud.

I use to not want it legalized but I am tired of spending the money on enforcing it.

I think they should leave it up to the individual states.
