which beans cause gas

I eat a small amount of beans (& split peas) every day.
Gas is significantly reduced if you soak them in water 18-24 hours prior to cooking.
Also, boiling for just 1-2 minutes is plenty if they've been soaked.
For a dog, I'd choose pinto beans as they're the cheapest & nutritional value is nearly the same with most dry beans.

Well, I listened to you and Freddie, and I took a 5 pound bag of pinto beans out of the pantry, why we had them is anybody's guess, but I soaked for 24 hours and then boiled a small batch of the 5 pounds to test things. I wanted to go slow at this so I only gave her a little bit at first.

No interest whatsoever. She gave me this wtf look.

OK... next batch.... I took a boneless porkchop and cut it up in teeny tiny pieces and boiled it with a small portion of the soaked beans. Same wtf look... but this time she ate it. So I gave her the rest of this batch. She ate it all up. That was last night (I gave her her bowl of the regular stuff too after she ate that, because it wasn't much really), but I wanted to see if she got gas or needed to go outside more to poop. This AM... no change. Sooo... for breakfast I gave her a big bowl of the beans (I boiled more with another porkchop and added yesterdays) and she loved it.

The biggest thing I was paying attention to all day was would it upset her stomach and give her gas. Now she always sits nearbye when I'm trading, so I would have smelled it if there was a problem. None whatsoever. She went out when she usually does, nothing really changed. And let me say this, (yeah I knooow)... but she is very very smart and communicates to me quite well. I would would have known if there was a problem. So.... we'll work on a new recipe. I do wanna look at the nutritional value of this stuff too.

Thanks for the idea you two.

Sounds good.
I would put everything in a blender after boiling & add small amounts of other items if needed.
A small amount of raw hamburger rather than pork chops would be good. No cooking of the meat.
I've never had a dog though so maybe they prefer chunky food?

After the shift...

Fireworks from a dog's point of view
Filling in for James Lileks, a member of the Twin Cities dog community has a few thoughts about Terror Boom Bomb Time.

JAMES LILEKS, STAR TRIBUNE
Birch the dog explains dogs’ fear of fireworks.
36

Hello, my name is Birch. I belong to James Lileks, who has the day off. I decided to write his column. On behalf of all of us in the dog community, I beg you to listen: Terror Boom Bomb Time is coming up and we dogs are begging you to stop it.

We have no idea what's going on and it scares the heck out of all of us, except for Winnie up the street — he's like a beer barrel with fur who wouldn't flinch if a meteor landed next to him. The guy's so chill his butt smells like ice cream. But the rest of us live in dread and fear, because this is the worst time of the year. And I say that as a dog with no sense of linear time at all, so you know previous July 4ths have left an impression.

Look at it from our point of view. It's a nice night. We're all outside, guests are over, the grill's working overtime and we all are having a good time. Then, all of a sudden, there's a sound we can't explain. Something really big just made a huge boom so loud that we can feel it in our guts. Or, worse, a whoosh and a shriek. Or a lot of short, buzzing sounds like when your mouth is full of bees.

And none of you humans seem at all bothered. By any of it.

I'm, like, "Hello? Did you not hear that? Do you not smell that? I know you have bad ears and you couldn't smell a dead deer if it was a mile in front of you, but I've got thick flaps of skin and fur hanging over my ears and I heard it. Every bang, boom and hiss. I'm convinced we're all in terrible danger. It could be that the world is ending. Let's find shelter! Now!"

But you humans just laugh and look at the sky.

Now, I'm used to you people not understanding threat assessment. Every day the mailman comes to kill us and I'm the only one who recognizes the threat. I do, because that's my job. So I respond appropriately. And somehow I'm misbehaving, being shushed and get a Dramamine wrapped in cheese — like that's going to help. Might as well dip a towel in 3.2 beer and let me chew on it for a while.

When Independence Day rolls around, you think you're doing me a big favor by putting me in the Thunder Jacket. It's supposed to give me comfort because it's tight. If you were terrified because a mob is heading down the street setting everything on fire, would you think "Well, I'd better put on some pants I wore in high school."

Are you thinking that a tight jacket reminds us of our mother disciplining us? Newsflash, Dr. Dolittle: When I was a puppy my mom didn't cinch me up in Saran Wrap when I was scared. And then you have the nerve to stand there and laugh at me as I stand immobile, too embarrassed to move.

I understand that this is how you celebrate your independence from England. I mean, I have no idea what that means, but neither do a third of the morons making the Terror Booms, and they don't have the excuse of being a dog, but that's another issue.

Point is, we dogs lived with this for too long, and this year we finally did something about it.

You might have noticed that there is no official Minneapolis fireworks this year. Gosh, I wonder how that happened. Not saying we used our influence with city officials. Not saying we didn't.

But Minneapolis, for one, is switching to a laser show. A blessedly quiet laser show. No Terror Booms from downtown. And while I know there will still be Bad Sounds, it's a start.

It's the cats' turn this year. A laser show? Let the cats go nuts for once.

100% serious here!!!

Anyone who really loves their dog, should be making their own food.

The bean thing, courtesy of Freddie and BKR.... was gold.

And soaking them for 24 hours, really does nix the gas thing. Why? I have no idea. But it does.

The recipe is dynamic now. Last week I used chicken leg quarters, crock pot style, but on a regular stove in a giant pot on a very low heat.

The one warning here however, leg quarters are dirt cheap, and if you slow cook them, the meat falls off the bone, but you have to actually get in there with your hands after it cools, and pull every friggin bone out. THERE ARE A MILLION LITTLE TINY BONES. Like micro toothpicks. Cost wise- way cheaper than salmon, and a good change of pace assuming they care lol... but you really have to get your hands in there after it cools down and and sift for teeny tiny bones.

Obviously, you save the broth, and use it to slow cook the brown rice.

New ingredient loved by Muttley:

Sweet potatoes.

I just chop them up. Like I did carrots. The rice takes about an hour, dump them in with 40 minutes to go. They soften up perfectly.

Other ingredients... cabbage. Chop it up.

In the bean dept.... split peas are new.
Black beans, Kidney beans have been mentioned already.
24 hr soak, and you can actually buy beef or chicken broth in cartons. Add a little of that to the soak.

And Oatmeal. To thicken in the last 5 minutes of the rice. (Not quick oats, the old school stuff)... and there is a reason I did this. I wanted the the thickening because occasionally she would have accidents in the middle of the night, ie, pee because I would water it down with hot tap water to warm it up out of the fridge. F- it... I use the microwave now, and that has gone over real well  ... but whatever. The raw oats cook down and it's a great healthy bulk filler. If you use the microwave though, obviously don't use too long, and stir it either way before you serve.

Freddie and BKR----> the beans were a genius suggestion.

I've been cooking for my mutt everyday since most all his teeth had to be removed several years ago. It's a labor of love and he's healthier. He had a couple bad teeth when we adopted him and then they all pretty much went a couple years later.
