The Filipino boxer-politician-entrepreneur’s new cryptocurrency, the “pac,” will enable fans to buy merchandise by exchanging secure digital tokens. Pacquiao isn’t the first celebrity to try something strange to monetize his fanbase: See the Kylie Jenner app or the Jeremy Renner app.

Cryptocurrency reminds me of the early days in the United States when all kinds of money was being used, including foreign coins and paper money (Spanish, British, Portuguese), state currency, continental currency, commodity money, gold and silver coins, etc. It led to inflation and depreciation with a lot of the money sooner or later becoming completely worthless. With all the other existing options for purchasing goods and investing in financial instruments, I have very little interest at all in cryptocurrencies.
