Most likely scenario is fake and paper account. The real goal is probably in creating something viral on social media and to earn real money off adsense.
If he did bet real money, which I doubt, he would have probably went in thinking "bet X" but hedged with social media presence so make back money in that case if all else fails.
But even if this were real money, I doubt this guy bet the farm. He must have a cool few mil to bet like that on options no less. He's not new to the game. Win some lose some. He lost this time, but there will be another day tomorrow. So there is nothing to feel sorry for here.
