You have that right (to disagree). Incidentally, I am not condoning homosexuality. I think it's fucked up. But that doesn't give me a right to tell people what they can or cannot do if it makes them happy, so long as it does not affect me (ie, they don't teach it in schools to my child, etc).

The Federal government certainly has no place to say. You either respect individual freedoms (all of them) or you don't. You can't have some and not others.

I'm mostly with Tao on this one. Though I find, particularly male, homosexuality disgusting perverted and unnatural. So long as they keep it to themselves I don't really care. It's their parades protests demands of special treatment and absurd accusations of homophobia that rubs me the wrong way. Them telling me that I must accept their filthy life style or there is something wrong with me.

I don't think the feds have any business getting involved with marriage.
To me it's a states rights issue.

I also think private business owners should be able to refuse to do business with gays, or anyone else for that matter.

Completely and wholeheartedly agree. That's a personal freedom. If you run a business and you don't want to serve a particular group of people, that is your right. If society as a whole finds that behavior wrong, then said business will eventually die out on it's own. It doesn't need government involvement to regulate it.

Now, in the case of public schools or state/federal government business, that right to serve only a select group of people is forfeited - as all people must be represented by the government, served by the government and pay taxes to the government. But private business falls under individual freedom - the freedom of the owner(s).

There are very few true Libertarians on this board. Oh sure, there are lots of people who believe in various individual liberties and freedoms. But the tough part is believing in - and fighting for - the freedoms and liberties of the people you despise/dislike. It is the principle that has to be upheld, not the individual. That comes naturally when principles are defended. It is also why the left is usually wrong. The left focuses on the individual, or a group of people it believes is not being treated correctly or deserves something or is slighted, whatever. The left will do this at the expense of another group of people in order to balance the playing field.

The right focuses (or should focus more) on the issue - the principle. Correct the principle and equality follows, as long as it is applied to everyone.
