I didn't make up anything about your possible Pakistani-Islamic background. The insults people use can easily betray ethnic roots, despite all efforts to ingratiate into local cultural stylistics while engaged in political subterfuge under a false, local, flag (ie "exGOP").

Street dogs are less (if ever) the butt of (or used to further) insults in Canada, the UK, or the US. Street dogs are more, if not commonly used, in religio-supremacist cultures like Pakistan, Somalia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Iran, where the term "street dog" is used to further an insult.
