Lumber/Plywood

True, the building industry is still by large measure using the imperial system. I think the reason is because there is a lot of building supplies from the US. And probably the average scientist, university student, house wife,... Is probably a few degrees smarter to comprehend the advantages of the metric system than the iq of your average builder.

  • You are from Canada correct?
  • Canada switched over to the metric system about 40 years ago.
  • Hows that working out in the building materials and real estate industry?
  • You would think after 40 years they would be using the metric system - but they are not.

Lol, really? How so? Because it's called foot? Are you idiotic? But let me play with you for a moment. So imagining to sit in a square foot is easier than imagining to sit a chair or place a desk on a square meter of space? Yes, for someone on LSD perhaps.

Well, no shit old growth pine is more dense than sustainable pine, but that's not what I said. Most people don't realize the density issues between the same species of trees among different time periods and don't realize a 2x4 is no longer 2 inches by 4 inches. It's not common knowledge so it's ok to point it out to educate people. It's like when, for example, breyer ice cream made smaller 'quarts' of ice cream.

That's just inflation. It ain't just Breyers ripping you off. The Snickers bar has been slowly shrinking in weight, and most people have not noticed. Along with every other candy/confectionery.

As for Lumber? *shrugs* For as long as I can remember, a 2x4 was always 1 3/4 by 3 3/4 inch, or whatever, due to a milling process. It had nothing to do with the type of wood.

But I would not know, I was not alive 100 years ago when they were felling old growth trees.

Ha, kindest explanation I have ever read to cover for that idiot who came up with this imperial crap when the metric system existed for centuries. As if some drunken seafarer is just smart enough to imagine how long 7/32 inches are but can't handle 15cm at all.
Actually, I'm surprised you missed the bigger picture here.
Or maybe you didn't, and the context of your response was lost by me in the inevitable vagrancies of internet parlance.

Either way...
It doesn't matter if it's a foot, an inch, or 'Old McKormic's shoe size' or "Old Ergooscwagen's standard brick length from 1550" ..... division by 1/2 on a scale that is marginable down to 1/256th of the unit in question.... worked for dozens of centuries.
It built the f'n pyramids.

Don't shoot the messenger here. Kmiklas asked a question, I provided the correct answer. There is ZERO doubt that measurements using a base 10 decimal system (is that redundant phraseology?)...are inherently way more precision. Ask any modern-day machinist. Of course they are.

BUT... The cat asked about SI... and I answered with the "why".

They tried this, in the late 1970s. Neither consumers nor American politicians cared for it, so the idea went away.

I remember this fight. I recall one of the biggest problems with this argument coming down to the cost of gasoline, during the 70s crisis. Which cost more for the same amount of money? 1 US gallon of gas, or four liters of gas?

Welp, as we can all plainly see, the metric system lost the war.

.

Get my point?

And it's proven time and again that the metric system is the superior way to measure things. The rest of the world thinks so, the entire world's scientific community thinks so. So, you need to forgive me when I say that a few Americans got it horribly wrong. Like education. Like gun laws. Like health care.

Tell me, anything in the following youtube clip said to be wrong? It sounds pretty fucking right to me.

I only call someone idiotic when science disproves his/her claims. The entire scientific community on the entire globe adheres to the metric system. Including American scientists. Get a grip man.
