Lose vs. Loose

I have to add another grating misuse of the language and that is: "couple". As in "a couple this or that" instead of "a couple OF this or that". AFAIK couple is not followed by "of" when referring to a physical act - as in 'the two gnats were coupling in my soup" or when referring to a pair of people, like those nice couples in the UTube clip earlier in the thread.
