Another great chapter in the decline of Chicago. There is brinksmanship going on for sure but that purchase agreement would have cost them big bucks to get into and to get out so there is some seriousness in the air too.

Some are saying that they called Lightfoot's bluff after she scoffed at them earlier and told them to concentrate on winning instead. What a biatch!

Sure there is the argument that they have talked about it for decades. So probably they won't move, unless you think things have gotten seriously worse there in recent years. Could happen in theory?

Let the viewers decide.

Lightfoot will cave with some deal. She needs them to get re-elected. Losing the Bears is not a great campaign issue for her if it happens. But it is still a big rift in the air when Chicago is already coming apart in lots of other ways. Like Biden, she ain't no unifier despite campaigning on it. Maybe the Team has had enough. I don't know. Not my area and I want to keep it that way.

Bears have been so awful overall them moving out of the city might be a benefit...

Also with where ticket prices are and the cost to go to a game, most attendees are people from the suburbs anyway.

NY Giants/Jets - stadium is outside the city (and state haha)
WFT - suburbs of Md
Cowboys - not in downtown Dallas


You get more space for training facilities and parking building out in the burbs. It is not a political issue but cities dont want to dedicate hundreds of millions for a stadium when they are struggling elsewhere in their budgets. the city does not own the team so let the rich team owners cough up a lot of the dough. Jerry Jones proved it can happen.

But Mayor Downer makes everything worse. First she tells them to just concentrate on winning if they have issues. Then when it gets further down the road she tells them "that if they have issues they need to come to the table." Sour. As if to say that they need to come to the table and kiss her ring and tell her what the problem is because reaching out to them is not what she does. Sour. Not how economic development and community development winners conduct themselves. Taking care of your existing base, always reaching out is the norm for the winners.

And yes to all the financial factors. At the same time though, as I said, community development includes helping a city to hold its soul and identity together. Or at least trying. Chicago has reached the point where its primary image is ghetto shootings of children. They might want to work a little harder at holding together some things that do not fall into that category. These issues are not unique to just big cities. All sorts of small towns in America have gone the route of building convention centers, and usually those are run at breakeven or a loss. But they are considered to be a plus for the community.

Both sides have to work their numbers and that is fine. I just think her bitchy little sour approach to most issues in Chicago is a downer and does not help a city that has become a downer for many. And yeh, I get that the team owners are not without faults and agendas and brinksmenship. But jeez, she is one sour bitch. That is not a good image to be at the tip of the spear of economic and community development.

also i think that is one of the older stadiums in the league right? Soldier Field? Probably still has teamsters buried in the cement supports...
