how long typically does a laptop work before it
craps out ?

I had bought a toshiba a few yrs ago
and in the last yr its motherboard
or something related to bios messed
up and it does not boot up
or if it does ... it stops again
meaning stops booting up
 
Well i had a sony laptop and it worked perfectly fine for like 7 years no problem
Since my budget is were tight that is why i am getting a dell other wise i would have gotten a sony

Whatever you do - go for the 512MB. It will make all the difference in the world. A jump to 1GB would be nice, but not as significant as from 256 to 512.
