Actually I'm at that stage of life. Officially an "Old Fart". I retired early in 2000 with a buy and hold mentality and soon found that half my nest egg had disappeared. I didn't panic and sell at the bottom but I realized that I wasn't comfortable with a buy and hold strategy.

I came up with a market timing strategy that kept me out of the 2008 melt down and also had me mainly in cash in Feb/Mar of this year.

My portfolio is a poorly diversified equity portfolio. To me there is no such thing as a safe stock. There can be quite a difference between a good company and a good stock.

Do I get whipsawed form time to time? You bet! but I'm more comfortable in cash with the market going up than I am in stocks with the market going down. It's much easier to lose opportunities than cash.
You have to do what allows you to sleep at night. Do what's right for you!!
I am very impressed.:thumbsup::thumbsup: I too am a Boomer, the over the hill generation.

I don't have any special skills or methods to move in and out to avoid disaster. My portfolio performance is lumpy because it is based on leverage but I am used to it by now.

Take care sir.

If you read some of my other posts you will understand. Let me try it one more time.

You can easily outperform SPY starting in 2009 if you could use borrowed money with low interest rates. It is easy to backtest that hypothesis. Now instead of margin you traded options.

The "edge" is a combination of leverage + bull market: The macro bet some of us made that this bull market would exceed everyone's expectation is where the profit came from. That is why I always said I was just lucky, I don't have any real trading skills.

By the way, SPY CAGR since 1-1-2009 was 14.1%. I did better.

Let's focus on your journey because mine is done.

fair enough, i accept that explanation. But how is buying and holding explain the fact that your swing trades( buy and hold
Since 2009 is not swing trading) is outperforming your buy hold strategy by a mile. I’m not disputing buying and holding with options outperformed spy but asking about your swing trades.

As for my journey, I’m on my 9th year full time, approaching 10. If u are financially free, I’m happy for u. I’m sure u have worked hard to get here. If u want to offer advise or share your experience I’m more than happy to listen. However, if u talk to me in a condensing tone like you are better than me, I have to defend myself. I’m generally a nice guy but if u make remarks like I have no clue what it’s like to be financially before even talking to me, knowing what I’m capable of as a trader, or knowing Me on a personal level, my response to u is this, u are way older than me. Anyone can buy spy and hold for 20-30 years. I am willing to say I would crush you in any type of a trading competition.

also, I was bought up to always respect my elders and this out of my character. I have to respond because of what u said.

To clarify, 80% of my portfolio consists of ~10 stocks, the remaining 20% I used to swing trade options. The 20% outperformed SPY by a mile.

@themickey, you are right. I have no business and I regret giving @10_bagger or anyone here any advice.

My last post on this thread sir.

All advice and sharing experiences are welcome and appreciated.

condescending comments like “I know 10_bagger wouldn't know what it’s like to be financially free” before even getting to know me, Keep that to yourself sir.

I wasn't going to post on your thread but thought one more is needed.

If I hurt your feeling I sincerely apologize it wasn't intentional but well meaning, I thought you were in a similar situation as I when I was your age and just wanted to be helpful.

Promise I won't do it again or give advice or share experience with you.

On this thread, I deeply regret I violated my own rules and disclosed too much of me and my finances. I know no one cares but still not cool.

Like I said chef, I like u man because u come across as someone who’s really nice. Im not hurt by what u said because u don't really know me and vice versa. What I take offense To was that I felt like u made assumptions before knowing me and felt like u are talking down on me.

thank u for clarifying. If what u said is meant with good intentions, I’m grateful for it. Maybe I overacted and I apologize as well. We are good chef so it’s water under the bridge.

have a good Sunday.

after I created this thread back in 2019, I knew immediately I put down the wrong heading because I had many people sending me private chat asking about my credentials and what I bring to the table.

The correct heading should have been “looking for full time equity traders to talk to.” I’m not there yet chef, but I’m also near my end game. Although, I’m Only 39, but I’ve spent almost half on my life learning and studying the financial market since 2003-2004. I Need a few more years to save up but soon I will more of my assets into real estate and longer term investing and start to work part time.
