I just built a new system and I sure as heck did not save 50%. In fact, I could have a bought a very similar system at Best Buy for less..but it was a HP ugh.
Best thing about rolling your own is you get to pick the parts, plan for upgrading in the future, etc...plus it's plain fun.
I can't agree more with this part. I would pay more just for the fun of "building" a system.
Part of the problem is there is not a good analogy to "building" a computer in other domains. The only think I can think of is "building" the most simple lego structure that you would buy a 5 year old. Snapping a handful of parts in place is not what we call "building" in most domains.
This was not hard to do 20 years ago and now you barely even need to use a screwdriver.
To me the real reason to "build" though is so you can troubleshoot yourself if something breaks.
