I was in a slightly similar situation a while back where I was hesitating if I should start a collaboration or not. I did a fair bit of qualifying before moving forward, but the main concerns I had turned out to be real. Mainly that the guy I was working with had family obligations, a full time job and lacked the determination and motivation that I have. In the end, I don't think he was good enough either, although on paper he was very qualified and spoke highly of his capabilities.
I ended up moving forward with it and it cost me a huge amount of time and ended up not leading anywhere in the end. So, I'm not going to repeat that again. If I need something done, I'll pay for it like I've always done.
Most people are dreamers and can't sustain the motivation and determination that's necessary to become successful as soon as the initial motivation wears off.

I can say about myself that from the point of view of fading motivation, I am very purposeful and persistent, especially when I have studied the topic very thoroughly and see an improvement in my work results at each interaction.
Having been at it for 20 years I don't doubt that.
My point is that it's a risk you're running with anyone you start out a collaboration with for various reasons. Most worthwhile projects of a certain scope ain't completed in a few weeks, so it takes a lot of commitment and determination to sustain the required effort for the time it takes until a satisfactory result is achieved - especially if R&D is involved.
