I will assume this man is serious, to a degree, and certainly probing. An amateur, a working professional, must use EOD methods , IMO , and instrument or market selection is critical.
Generally speaking there are two methods on which systems are built....mean reversion and trend following. Paitence , as it relates to frequency of trading and position size, ( lever or not)
will sepetate the winners from losers when one properly executes the fundamental method to follow. Correct definition of trend and assumption of,its continuance is required and most will
