Yet African Americans have nearly the lowest rates of vaccination among any ethnic group. In fact, white Americans are being vaccinated at a rate 3 times higher than Black Americans. New CDC figures show that of those who have received at least the first dose of a vaccine, 5.4% are Black people, compared to 60% who are white people. According to recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll, about 35% of Black Americans said they don’t plan to get the vaccine, citing fears about safety and concerns that the vaccines are so new.

At least the vaccination hesitancy trend for blacks is moving an improving direction as outreach efforts in black communities are improving acceptance.

The real problem is some states directing vaccines away from primarily black counties and cities while inventing flimsy excuses for doing so. In Alabama we see the state directing vaccines away from Jefferson County despite a waiting list of over 125,000 black people. In Florida, we see Governor DeSantis directing vaccine doses to wealthy white GOP enclaves of his supporters.

Alabama: We're not distributing vaccines to majority-black communities because of vaccine hesitancy.
Jefferson County: We have a waiting list of 125,000 black people people ready right now.
