London independent traders, why not relocate?

If you wanted to work in the markets when they were open outcry then you had to come here. If you are successful and live near the parks then it is as good as anywhere. I popped over to a bitcoin conference in brick lane in 2013. Can't do that unless you are organised if you live elsewhere.

Yeah, I am assuming if someone doesn't live near a park

Colchester is a lovely place to do trading.

So is Chelmsford :)

But seriously. If you're an independent trader then where you live will could in theory be anywhere (optimised for quality of life, cost, and tax system), but will also have some path dependence. A lot of succesful traders, in my experience, are ex industry professionals and are therefore likely to live in or around London. Essex in particular is a hot bed of ex-LIFFE traders, and a few trading arcades continue that tradition in a small way. I live where I live because I used to work in London (many moons ago I did live in London as well), and now with kids at school.

I can't understand why anyone would want to live *in* London unless they're working there, or they extremely rich and enjoy the attractions of living in the city (which I don't).

If I was starting completely from scratch (without the path dependence) actually the UK isn't a bad place to be. Away from London it's not as expensive as say Norway, there are some nice places to live if you choose carefully, the schooling and healthcare is free and good, and the tax system is pretty friendly for a developed country. I used to live in Dubai, and I'd certainly rather live in the UK.

That's what I think...I used to live in HK and enjoyed the clubbing scene when in 20s, now I rather spend time walking my dog and reading in a quiet park. Colchester is on my list because of its top royal grammar school.

For those independent traders in London, I wonder why do you live in London?
I mean, it is not like you are in London for the career opportunities or need to network with people. It is not likely you are in the 20s or early 30s, longing for social interactions. Unless you are trying to build it into a firm, why not relocate to a more liveable smaller city such as Bristol?
Every city is liveable and London is world class. Can see why plenty would want to stay. and networking even as an independent trader is good.

In Australia, if you are an import and do more than 12 months jail, there is a high chance you get deported permanently after jail sentence.

Britain and Ireland sent their criminals to Australia, virtually transforming the country into a penal colony.

Now Australia is doing the exact opposite and deporting convicts.

Poetic justice at its best. :D
