Living above one's means

'how many women is he living with?'

Yuk, the worst relationship with women is that based on money as the first condition. Have been there, not a healthy feeling, better call the escort service and offload.

"Just pinning four stars on the shoulder does not make one a 4-Star General"

Dress for success. Think like a four star general. Act like one (this will take some education, role models, mentors ,etc)

When you hit is big, then you can wear your pajamas anywhere.

Agree to some extent but Dress for Success for me means $200 suits that look good not $900 Designer selections. Until and unless somebody flips them, no body can tell what line they came from.

Let us not forget that 1920s market crash and resulting economic depression was caused by the credit bubble. The problem is those heavy in debt can show their a*sses to the public and make government (eventually public) pay for their luxaries.

I did however liked your comment on 'first making it and then wearing Pajamas in public'.........guess if Warren Buffet starts wearing PJs in public soon it will become a fashion line. ;-)

Maybe $600/night is a lot to you, but to someone else it's chump change. How do you know the people staying in that resort are living beyond their means? After all, you stayed there.

These days I never stay in anything less than a 5-star hotel. So what if it costs $150 more? I'm not gonna die rich and give half my money to the government, after I've been giving them nearly half every year of my working career.

Where are you finging 5 star hotels for $150/night?

I could buy a used BMW M Roadster (about £26,995) ...but, I have a used Honda Civic that looks, performs and drives just as good as the BMW

So your used Civic performs as well as an M Series roadster? Wow, that must be some tuning job!!

As to whether your used Civic looks as good as the Beemer, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Of course, BMW build quality has been declining whereas Honda is still relatively stable, but still...

I understand what you are saying in this thread, but I see these as natural cycles of boom and bust, and I don't really question them or ask plaintive questions about 'Why must it be this way'. If you figure you have a perspective that others don't, the only thing for you to do is to make sure to make money off of it; this is your obligation if you have kids, since you knowingly brought them into the world as it is today. This is nature red in tooth and claw. You have the choice of moving to a desert island, as long as you don't have kids.

With regard to your observation that immigrants or the descendants of immigrants are driving nice cars - I didn't read through the whole thread, but I do hope that if you had a point to make, you had the guts to make it in a subsequent post.

I got it a couple of years ago. 10 years ago I got really sick, couldn’t work for a year and got wiped out as I was highly leveraged. I then recovered, made some good money but had no goal.

About 2 years ago I figured it out, save massively, have zero debt. I am so much happier. Freedom is not having debt. I see so much waste around me and I am sickened by it. A few years ago I would have admired it. I used to have massive problems sleeping because of worry but not now.

I live in a neighborhood of multi million dollar homes and the people are generally so unhappy. Everyone judges everyone else based on crap. When you get a peek behind the curtains there are real problems masked by consumerism. Simplify simplify.

i think deviltrader stated spending $150 more for 5 star hotels, not just $150 per night.

I'm thinking "No cologne, attract no bone"

Cologne on straight men went out in the early '90s. At least in America...of course I'm a bit past the clubbing days so maybe it's back. Ugh.

I am sure you know cologne was never really in -- for real men.
