Go back and read the NYT editorials from 1979 and 1980. People were laughing at Reagan. Nobody took him seriously until after the fact. Just as no one on the right took this hillbilly from Arkansas who had a reputation for woman chasing seriuosly. Nobody on the right saw Clinton as a threat.

Reagan established himself as a strong conservative and won the support of many conservative groups.He was a popular republican governor in a large democratic state.He won the primaries in large states like Texas and California in his first presidential run.He had very good debating skills and was very likable as a person,he had huge name recognition.Reagan also had united republican support unlike todays GOP candidates.

Considering I was alive and able to vote in 1985. Yes, Reagan was a joke. The GOP was derided as picking an actor for their nominee. When he won, the mainstream GOP did not take him seriously, as he was an actor, and did not have the right blood lines. Look it up, it is all there. Reaganomics was a joke. Reagan, like Clinton, was not recognized until well after he left office.

We don't have those jobs now and Obama support stays at 45 % approval , 70-80 % favorability,and 60 % odds at re election so there is no reason to think 9% unemployment makes him toast
