Graham unloads on Trump: Blind spot on Russia 'undermining his entire presidency'

By Alicia Cohn - 07/09/17 09:59 AM EDT

A senior Senate Republican on Sunday said President Trump’s plan to work with Russia on cybersecurity is “pretty close” to the “dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called Trump’s Friday meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin “disastrous” and said the president has a “blind spot” on Russia.

“When it comes to Russia I am dumbfounded, I am disappointed, and at the end of the day he’s hurting his presidency by not embracing the fact that Putin is a bad guy,” Graham said on NBC News’s “Meet the Press.”

“He is literally the only person I know of who doesn’t believe Russia attacked our election in 2016,” Graham said of Trump, who has said that “nobody really knows” whether the Russians were behind attempts to hack the 2016 presidential election.

Graham stressed that there is no evidence the Russian meddling influenced the vote, but he said that by denying the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies, Trump “throws our intelligence communities under the bus.”

Trump on Sunday tweeted about working with the Russians, writing, "it is time to move forward in working constructively with Russia!"

He also said only four intelligence agencies have concluded Russia meddled in the election. Those agencies are the CIA, the National Security Agency, the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Graham slammed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Trump for being “ready to forgive and forget” when it comes to Russian attacks on the 2016 presidential election.

“This whole idea about moving forward without punishing Russia is undermining his entire presidency,” he said. Graham is pushing for increased sanctions on Russia. The Senate passed such a bill, but it is currently delayed in the House. Reports have indicated the White House wants to soften the language.

“The more you do this, the more people are suspicious about you and Russia,” Graham warned Trump. "I am intent on punishing the Russians for interfering in our election."

The cost of putting some people off by mingling with Russia, is much lower than the benefits we could get from resolving Syria and putting Iran in the irrelevant corner. Russia can also play a role in forcing China to act on NK.

Some people can't think strategically.

there is a pattern here.
everytime trump does well and seems statesman like... the establishment marches out their attack dogs...

First its traitor McCain or Graham
frequently if there is something in it for the rabidly uniformed dem base..
Schumer or Schiff will join in..
than maxine waters will take it to the extreme.

you will note this is a similar pattern we seen on economic issues with the Fed.

Its all orchestrated by the cronies and its lapped up by the crony owned media.

Kabuki theater for lefties, trolls and the unaware and uninformed.

Trump is a complete lightweight statesman and a simpleton, I bet Tillerson will pull the ripcord when the time is right, the only thing he has going for him is Gary Cohn, if tax cuts don't get passed he's gone also.

I don't know enough to argue with you about what Trump's real beliefs are... and whether he is capable of being a great statesmen of his own accord. I have no reason to believe Trump is a simpleton. The guy went to wharton and figured out how to make billions in New York. You really think a simpleton could do that? Wall Street parts simpletons and their money for a living... yet Trump seemed to thrive in that very tough arena.

But, Trump's best speeches are written by Miller who is like Bannon.
Cohn is the democrat establishment guy and its is my belief he and Kushner are the ones causing trump to risk losing re - election due to non follow through on his campaign pledges.

Apparently Cohn and Kushner are influencing trump to work with Ryan and McConnell and that has been a disaster for Trump. These guys were also trying get Trump to stay in the Paris accord and that would have been a disaster for America and Trump. They are also pushing to keep us in Nafta and probably pushing for TPP.

So in short as far as Tillerson is concerned... I don't yet have an opinion, when I hear him in the media he seems fine or better. However, I fervently hope Cohn does leave. But, why would the establishment ever want to lose Trumps ear?

that is bullshit.

the major offense is what hillary did. she should face trial for all the crooked things she did.

if Trump did something illegal we hope is is punished as well.

This is the most patriotic McCain and Graham has been in their political careers. Its sad trump supporters don't mind our enemies interfering in our elections as long as it helps their guy.Thats the traitors.
