I agree with Buy1Sell2.

When I start a thread, I will usually just put in the first 2 or 3 paragraphs with the link. If anyone is interested in the subject, they can just go to the website and read the rest of the story.

No need to copy/paste the whole damn thing. Scrolling down through all of that is a headache. Who needs that. lol

Some of us prefer not to go to a different site with ads,cookies,automatic video playing,possible viruses /malware etc

News outlets don't use verbatim quotes of more then a few sentences, they paraphrase or they get permission. Copying and pasting long extracts is copyright infringement, and can get the source entity upset, especially if it came from behind a paywall.

I share excerpts sometimes from a site I subscribe to and wondered if it would be an issue.

Character limitation like what is being proposed isn't going to happen. If someone posts a long copy and paste, the important thing to understand is that you don't have to read it. All you have to do is scroll past it in three seconds. However, someone else may want to read every word of that article because it resonated with their current interests. So the most important concept is having a choice.

Character limitations take choice out of the equation and force a certain level of brevity, so it requires that the poster somehow edit the article down to comply with an arbitrary character limit which the original article author never intended. I'd much rather accommodate giving people a choice to read or scroll than requiring that their posts pass through some tiny keyhole in order to be accepted.

I think the Tribe has spoken, limit your Posts to small brief concise paragraphs.

You wouldn't have a four year old child read a wall of text. ETers are no different.
