Life after 50

Yep, September 21st is right around the corner and that will be the end of the 40's for me. A bunch of my friends are also virgos so as a pre-celebration, we all went to Las Vegas last week and called it "Virgos in Vegas". Luckily for me, all of my friends are hot as hell. Here's a pic I took of them standing in the Marquee Day Club at the Cosmopolitan.

So if turning 50 means more excursions like this, I'm all in. :D
Apart from the high intensity celebrating, what does your workout look like these days as you round the corner to 50?

Lately I've been doing 3 days on, 1 day off.

Day 1 - Quads, Calves, Abs
Day 2 - Back, Biceps, Hamstrings
Day 3 - Chest, Triceps, Shoulders, Abs

I usually work out between lunch and dinner, which is around 3:30PM.

Diet:

Breakfast: Smoothie with assorted frozen fruit and 40 grams of protein.
Lunch and Dinner: Half the plate is meat like grilled chicken or steak, the other half is a salad with a vinegarette dressing (usually greek or Italian).

Overall I'm shooting for 160 grams of protein per day.

Fun at night: Usually a couple of handfuls of BBQ potato chips, which is my favorite. And along with that, I usually always have a couple of Bourbon drinks with a splash of Pepsi and a lemon wedge. I keep my carbs low at lunch and dinner so I can justify having the chips and alcohol at night.

On Sundays, I will go off the rails for a meal or two, which usually means pizza and/or bacon cheeseburgers.

So you train 6 days out of 8? While I admire the discipline and dedication, that's just a bit too "fitness lifestyle" for me. You don't find such frequency (and presumably volume) at all taxing?

If I recall correctly, you used to do full body routines before of various configurations. Interestingly, I just started an upper/lower split routine on Tuesday, with the second workout of the week completed earlier this morning. I haven't done a split routine since 2005 but I thought I'd give it a try, but this time with each muscle group being worked only once. I'll give it a go for at least a month and then check my strength and a few key measurements to see if there is any difference either way. Not that I expect it. Although I hope it doesn't go the wrong way.

If you're getting 40 grams of protein in a smoothie, I assume there is some protein powder involved. After some years of shunning protein powders, I started taking some whey isolate about a month ago so that I can cut down on my meat consumption and maybe add a few grams on top of that. What kind of protein are you taking? And for context, since you are shooting for 160 grams a day, about how much do you weigh, if I may ask?

The split makes the whole setup less taxing but after day 3, my body is like "Ok, it's time for a break".

Here's the protein I use the most:

And I also use this one because they've got a bigger variety of flavors:

I'm currently weighing around 177 lbs upon waking.

So apart from abs, you work each muscle group directly twice every 8 days. How many sets per muscle group per workout? (I'm really fixated on this volume/frequency thing, eh?)
