The restraint from our own religious fundamentalists is noticeable today. So far none of our big preachers has called the shooting "God's punishment for gays". I guess they're learning.

Someone should interview Cruz, directly ask him that question, and see what he thinks.

These guys have learned to sidestep the issue, and keep their believes to themselves. Internally, due to a Mute God, they are saying the LGBTs are taking the elevator down when they get to the pearly gates. No crime in believing that though, there is no thought police.

The Christian Community doesn't wish ill-will on the gay community. The problem isn't the person, it's the sin.

But I have to ask why this is viewed as a "hate" crime?

I know you live in Canada, and when I went there, the Visa application process was a lot tougher than the US. Therefore, I don't understand why everyone feels free to complain that the US wants to bring the standards up...if other countries are so great, why not bring their standards down then?

You need to read more carefully. At no point did I ask the US to bring standards down. What I asked is why are Trump and so many posters on this site saying standards HAVE been brought down ( specific references blaming Obama have been made ); I see no evidence that they have and the rhetoric is likely pure bs. I cannot currently confirm this except to note that personal experiences suggest the Canada-to-US aspect has tightened not become more open the last 30 years.

I am open to hear how standards have in fact been lowered in the US.

And perhaps more importantly, it is HOW standards are brought up that is important. Trump and some posters on this site are specifically advocating racist criteria for immigration. No such criteria exists in Canada. We would never have a policy that the border will be closed to ALL Muslims as a preventative measure just in case they are terrorists. It's a ridiculous construct but the US has gone so far down the rabbit hole that it's taken seriously.
