Learning about ECNs and Market Makers

As a new equities trader, I need to do some research to learn more about the following:
ARCA
INET
BRUT
SUMO
SIZE
TRIM
CRTC
other ECN's, and Market Makers

I am NOT asking others here to do my homework, but would like to ask if there are sites, info centers, etc where I can read up on just exactly what these are, and how they function.

I did find the NYSE Arca site, and will continue to Google stuff, and search the forum threads here on ET, but just thought I'd ask if anyone has some suggstions for sources of info.

these sites traffic has zero to do with anything. that just means most traders know nothing about it. I wouldn't ignore an ecn that does 100 million shares a day...

let him pick his ecns based on web traffic... Im sure he'll do just fine...

Bloomberg runs an ecn too...


As to market makers...
there's a lot more to say about them. Do some research on the underwritting process and you'll understand better why they have the obligation of making a market... You could also look up info on the VWAP to know how they benchmark their excecution. As to who they are, well, Merryll Lynch, Goldmand and Sachs, Bear Stern, Bank of America, Wachovia, Knight, just to name a few.

Alexa is a data miner. *avoid*
 
Does anyone use Automated Trading Desk (AUTO) orders? There is a lot of liquidity on it but I find it tough to find liquidity. Has anyone got any tips on getting filled usng AUTO?
