I just read an npr article. They did no even know the function of some of the genes they selected but they found them necessary.

So what, that process of chemical rearrangement could be achieved organically if they had millions of years in time to conduct the study. The fact that chemicals could be arranged in a way shows that the whole thing is a chemical arrangement, you only see a pattern into the whole thing and say its not random because you see the final arrangement and not when it was a useless structure.
