Weekly options give you a greater chance to get smashed to bits. It's really a method of hoovering up retail punters' cash. the smaller the timframe the less likely you are to succeed.

one could use weeklies (singles or multi-legged) to hedge ones risk. Idk if that would smash someone to bits.

All depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Certainly weeklies have a place in some strategies, some interesting things happen in the couple days before expiration to some of the greeks which are hard for MMs models to handle that can represent opportunities.
