Largest brokers by volume in equities traded on NASDAQ

Hi All, does anyone know the TOP 5 brokers by volume in equities traded on NASDAQ?

I am in the process of selecting the right broker for my trading activity and I would like to start by identifying the largest traders by volume in equities on NASDAQ.

Brokers have only as much "volume" as the exchange they are facilitating has? Your question is a bit confusing.

I can see how that might sound like a sensible idea, but it's got nothing to do with how your trades will do, or how you yourself will do as a trader. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

But I'll tell you this:
think about how much you trade (or *intend* to trade) and then go out and look at all the different schemes there are to charge commissions, shorting costs, margin costs, payment (check-writing, wire-issuing, ACH, etc) costs.... The most common questions are
1) Is there a ticket charge?
2) how many shares/futures do I intend to trade?
3) option ticket charge too?
4) how much per option contract?

Get these charges directly from the brokers, not their competitors.
This will quickly separate the wheat (few/far-between) from the chaff.

When you have a TOP 3-4, go through and look at their trading screen-shots.
What set-ups provide you with an intuitive grasp of a moving market?
What set-ups would allow you to *manage* your positions without having to guess what was going on in your account?
DO NOT pay any attention to graph *features* -- they're mostly noise. And generally, the simpler the better. DO PAY ATTENTION to the graphing!! Is it framed well? Can you navigate quickly from one screen to another, or change dates/screen sizes/assets smoothly and efficiently?? THAT COUNTS.

DON'T TRADE until you have paper-traded, and feel BORED TO DEATH cuz you know what's going on.

Yes I agree, but I am curious to know which brokers have historically had the highest equity volumes. I understand that NASDAQ publishes this information, but unfortunately I don't have access to this information. I would be grateful if someone who does, would let me know.

Yes I agree with you and thank you for the tips - very useful. I am just curious to know which brokers have historically had the highest equity volumes. Brokers don't have volume. The exchange does.

Are you asking which brokers are most conducive to facilitating a trade on the NASDAQ exchange? You still have me lost. And I think you may be lost as well, because your questions do not compute.

I'm not sure what value you get from this. Back in the 70' and 80', NASDAQ was controlled by equity OTC market makers and trading was done with a phone call. Today, NASDAQ volume is electronic. It does not matter who does the volume, your order ends up on the same book, if you can direct your order there.

Not sure what this means.

For example, if all of Old Man Morse's clients decided to trade NYSE equities instead of Nasdaq equities, that does not mean that LightSpeed trading is not good for Nasdaq equities. The broker is as good as it's executions, not the exchange that most of it's clients choose to trade upon? Am I off on this here?

Edit. Ug, Robert, this was total coincidence that we posted at the same time! You were the first example I could come up with lol

Hi Truetype, in dealing with several Brokerages, I have heard several claims such "we execute 18% of US consolidated volume in equities". I would just like to verify some of these claims and am interested to see actual volumes of these Brokerages. I know the NASDAQ has a Monthly MP Share Volume Report (http://www.nasdaqtrader.com/trader.aspx?id=mpvolume) which shows you exactly what volumes the brokerages are trading on NASDAQ. My question is if someone has access to such statistics and is willing to share them with me.
