Speed limit sighs don't prevent those who ignore them from speeding any more than gun laws prevent those who ignore them from illegally obtaining firearms and committing crimes with them.

MOST firearms used in crimes are stolen, not purchased.
Almost no one acquiring a firearm for illegal purposes is or will be subjected to a background check even with more gun control laws.

On the background check form one fills out there is a question asking if you have any mental health issues. The craziest of the crazy merely has to check the "No" box.
 
So? Do you think that means they'll obey either if they think its in their best interests not to? The same applies to gun laws.
