Kyrsten Sinema goes independent, scrambles Senate

Sinema — ever unpredictable and inscrutable — told Senate Majority Leader Schumer of her decision yesterday, Politico reports.
I take issue with Politico's adjective "inscrutable". She not inscrutable. She's as transparent as the air. She's there to do the bidding of her big campaign contributors. Inscrutable, NO; Deceitful, YES.

The Democrats chances of picking up any seats in 2024 are pretty low. FL has become redder and TX hasn't shown it's that close to becoming a swing state yet. 2018 was also a more favorable environment for them (midterms under Trump's presidency) when Scott and Cruz won their seats. MT, AZ, WI, OH, and WV all seem more likely to flip the other way than TX or FL. Manchin won't even break a filibuster and the seat is almost guaranteed to become Republican if he leaves. MT is a solid red state and Tester is way less likely to sneak by in a more neutral environment. OH has been trending redder and redder. Tim Ryan was a pretty decent candidate and Vance was on the shitty side, yet Vance won easily. AZ and WI are very much swing states and it will depend on candidate quality. The GOP has gotten more extreme in AZ despite the state becoming purple. However, Sinema could play spoiler, allowing pretty much any Republican to win.

Good analysis here. The republicans hold a long term advantage in the senate and I would have and did say the democrats would not hold the senate in 2020 or 2022 but here we are. Donald Trump just keeps on giving. If we could get one more election cycle out of Trump it will be very possible the democrats win the senate and the presidency in 2024. If he goes to jail or fades out then yes republicans should sleepwalk into both next cycle.

I kind of like Sinema, because she was pretty steadfast about not raising the top tax rate back to 39.6%. I actually emailed her thanking her for being independent. In my opinion 37% is already unfairly high. There's also the 2.35% Medicare tax to make the real top rate 39.35%. The super wealthy don't really pay ordinary income taxes. So she was fighting for us somewhat rich day traders who mostly pay short-term capital gains (taxed at ordinary rates), but not super rich people (taxed at long-term rates) lol. Now, do most Americans care about this? No. Do I see her proposing any really unique ideas to move the country forward? No. Is she part of the corrupt system that mostly serves special interests/wealthy campaign contributors? Resounding yes. While I'm not a fan of how rigged the rules are, in reality I think it's better than many of the alternatives progressives are offering. I really believe in a fundamental truth about economics: in the long-run an economy can only be as strong as the goods and services it produces. I think progressives often dismiss the importance of facilitating production (supply side) and just believe if there's demand then enough people will magically fulfill those desires. Over the past year we've seen the consequences of such a nonsense theory through super high inflation. At the end of the day we still need the materials, the workers, etc.

shocking!
I still think she's pretty corrupt. I wish there were more non-corrupt senators who weren't so ideologically on one end of the spectrum or the other. There are basically no non-corrupt moderates in Congress.
