Check out this BMR calculator. I'm a similar weight to you. My BMR is right around 2250 calories per day. But that's how many calories I expend if I don't get out of bed. On a sedentary day I increase that number by 20% and on an active day I increase that number by 35-50%. I rarely diet below 2000 calories per day because I know if I do I'll start catabolizing muscle and put stress on my organs.
I'm sure if your doctor signed off on it you'll be okay. But I just don't want you to end up regretting cutting at too drastic a rate. Good luck to you sir!
As a side note, an easy way for most people to estimate their BMR is to multiply your body weight x 10. So if you weight 230 lbs, you multiply that by 10 so the result would be 2,300 calories.
