Justice Department ‘Discussed’ Legal Action Against Climate Skeptics

Attorney General Loretta Lynch testified Wednesday that the Justice Department has “discussed” taking civil legal action against the fossil fuel industry for “denying” the “threat of carbon emissions” when it comes to climate change.

During Lynch’s testimony at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said that he believes there are similarities between the tobacco industry denying scientific studies showing the dangers of using tobacco and companies within the fossil fuel industry denying studies allegedly showing the threat of carbon emissions. He went on to point out that under President Bill Clinton, the Justice Department brought and won a civil case against the tobacco industry, while the Obama administration has “done nothing” so far with regard to the fossil fuel industry.

Will they prosecute the alarmists 50 years from now when "climate change" has been revealed as a complete fraud.

Whatever happened to big tobacco during all those years they were lying under oath to the public?
It's nowhere near an equivalency.

That means every life-form is a criminal because they emit carbon. You, me, the fern, the tree.

That same DOJ likely won't prosecute Hillary. My oh my, how far we've fallen.

This is silly of course. In the case of the tobacco industry there was eventually hard, undeniable statistical and physical evidence that chronic smoking caused serious health problems. (See the surgeon general's report on smoking and health.) On the other hand the connection between anthropomorphic CO2 and climate change is tenuous at best, and the expert scientific community (not the scientific community in general) is split in several directions over this issue. Until there is a broad consensus among climate experts, any suits of this nature have no chance of succeeding. The testimony on both sides, to a jury, would appear equally credible. There is zero chance that the justice department would bring a suit of this nature. There is not zero chance that they might consider it, but it won't happen. Assuming you are an educated individual, whenever you read or see something that seems a bit daft, it probably is.

There are no grounds yet that have come to public light to prosecute where the counter argument isn't equally credible. If you are a Federal prosecutor you are obliged to consider that. Hillery is a very unpopular person among some of us, I personally don't care for her. Prosecution or non-prosecution , in her case, would appear equally political. This is not the kind of case you're interested in if you are a DOJ Prosecutor. It is not going to happen now, nor under a Republican President who may follow Obama. I am not happy with Hillery's performance as our Sec. of State. From my perspective her leading of the Dept. was very much "mainstream", too cautious, and caused as many problems as it solved.

Kerry's leadership as far more forward looking. He is more willing to take political chances. He appears to be his own man. Obama will give him free rein because he will have to, or Kerry will resign. I think Kerry has the chance to go down in history as one of our best Sec. of State. To have any chance of rising to that level you have to be Secretary during very tumultuous times. The Middle East situation would seem to qualify. Kerry was appointed Secretary of State in Feb 2013, two year's later, less two months, (Dec 2014) the U.S. Changed its Cuba Policy, Eight Months later (July 2015) the Iran Nuclear Accord was announced. Kerry is currently instrumental in bringing about a cessation of hostilities in the Syrian War, if he can bring the parties together, a herculean task, he will cement his place in history. (The ISIS problem will linger of course. God caused that problem, God will have to solve it.)

And that's silly of course, too, because "eventually"... at that time we can be sure there were real smoking deniers as well, and not just the liars in tobacco whose profits were threatened.
