Just Wondering ET, Why the Anonymity?

Quote from enforcer99:

people get too worried about identity theft. as long as you protect your bank account you are fine.

Well, that wasn't my experience with identity theft. It took me 3 months to get the collection agents off my back and it was a hassle all the way. WRT Equifax and other credit rating agencies, I know that in my case, although they were willing to listen to what I had to say, they definitely would have shown the collection action on my credit report had I not shown them that it was a case of identity theft, and again, it was a long drawn out process to get them all the proofs they needed.

Sucks, man Hopefully soon, the 3 agencies will be required to put a credit freeze on EVERYONE for free, and people will be in control of their identities, instead of those who well it to everyone without our permission.

I like to control what the search engines know and can divulge about me, so I prefer to seed them with only the information about me that I want to be seen by people who might look me up.

So for example, I might go over to a private plane discussion forum and post a thread using my real name about how the rear toilets in my gulfstream g550 make too much noise when flying <300 knots etc.

Or maybe I'll use my real name in an african humanitarian discussion forum and confess that the desperate conditions in the sudanese refugee camps have really been taking a toll on me and my aid work, and the last 3 years especially have been brutal.

:D;)

I do the same thing. There are many posts on the net about how magnum condoms don't fit me because they are too small.

Not sure what that has to do with my credit rating though.

But it would be cool to be named "Hugh Johnson"! :D

Which reminds me how, many years ago, mischievous airline co-workers at Heathrow airport used to amuse themselves on quieter days. Word would pass around that a newbie was staffing the airport's information counter, which also had the responsibility of making paging announcements over the terminal tannoy.

Heartless colleagues would approach the newbie with a slip of paper and ask her to make the call. A moment or two later, several hundred travellers listened to an 80 decibel plea for:

"The person wanting Mike Hunt, please come to the information counter" , or

"Would the lady travelling with a Hugh Janus please go to the TWA desk"

Why do you think most ET'ers (myself included) hide behind anonymous screen names and wont so much as reveal even their first names? (With the exception of just a few like Don Bright, Jack Hershey and.....dare I say it......Timmy Sykes.)

Unlike a forum like Yahoo, we all had to register to use this one, so you would think it would be a little less crowded by trolls. I've been on many other non-trading forums where participants knew each other by name and sometimes would use a self-photo as an avatar or even a link to their personal website in their signatures.

So why the fear? Why the anonymity? My opinion is this; because many here are living a fantasy, an alter ego if you will. And as long as they don't reveal their true identity they just might pull it off.

By the way, my name is Don

Quote from nutmeg:

The urge to act out an entirely different persona is widely shared across cultures, social scientists say, and may be motivated by curiosity, mischief or earnest soul-searching. Certainly, it is a familiar tug in the breast of almost anyone who has stepped out of his or her daily life for a time, whether for vacation, for business or to live in another country.

"It used to be you'd go away for the summer and be someone else, go away to camp and be someone else, or maybe to Europe and be someone else" in a spirit of healthy experimentation, said Dr. Sherry Turkle, a sociologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Now, she said, people regularly assume several aliases on the Internet, without ever leaving their armchair.
