Quote from AAAintheBeltway:
We have a constitutional right to own effective self-defense firearms. The burden is not on us to demonstrate why we need a particular weapon or why it shouldn't be banned. The burden is on those, like you, who would infringe our constitutional rights.
The history and context of the Second Amendment demonstrate that the drafters envisioned citizens having weapons that could be used militarily. That was the whole point of it, to prevent governments from disarming citizens. The fact that something like an AR15 is a civilian version of a military rifle should give it enhanced constitutional protection, not less.
Please don't give me a load of crap about "times have changed" etc. There were no radio and Tv stations and computerized printing presses back then either, yet we still apply freedom of the press to modern inventions. Same with guns. If times have changed that much, you are free to amend the constitution.
There is no earthly reason for the federal government to get involved in this. It is clearly a matter for the states to decide. If people in NYC want to make themselves vulnerable to crime, that is their concern, within limits. That's not good enough for fanatical gun banners however. Like all liberals, they want to force their views down everybody's throat, all the time preening about how tolerant they are.
