Rock - isn't it a little presumptive to say that 81% of people are messed up in the head?
I personally don't buy the validity of that poll, but it seems a questionable argument that 81% of people are screwed in the head and the other [only] 19% are right in the head.
Got to agree with you about Moore - he's almost as annoying as Hillary Clinton.
He's so myopic that he blew is only possibly valid argument for keeping the monument. Instead of arguing it on religious grounds (which was sure to fail), he should have argued that it was one of several monuments to documents that legal codes are based on.
He'd probably have still lost, but he'd at least have had a little better chance than trying to swing with the guaranteed to lose "religious freedom" argument.

i think it could very easily be said that barbie is worshipped ,or at least the mold that women are to be preppy, sexy beautiful and in many cases subservient to the male...how many kids grow up trying to be the macho man their dad was? I see your point but brainwashing ( if you are going to cal it that) is all around are children in every facet of their life.....should we teach children respect for elders or let them figure it out? should we teach them to always study and do homework or wait until they figure it out at 22? we take hold of our children;s lives in so many ways not just religion....and teaching children of the almighty is only one aspect...is it wrong to teach them to honor they mother and father? Turn the other cheek if you are striked? share your belongings with others? Do not lie? steal? cheat? ....what part of this is the brainwashing?....Are you for the teaching of all these commandments but against the 1st one teaching the existence of God? Actually Stu, I would venture to say that the cultural indoctrination we all undergo is, because it is so subtle, perhaps much more insidious, or at leat, far closer to "brainwashing", than anything that religion, in the modern world, has done.
Want to drop your religion? Don't think there's anything of value there? No problem. The world won't even bother to blink. On the other hand, try living outside the boundaries of (non-religious) cultural norms and expectations and you'll soon discover what being a pariah is all about.

You asked me should children be taught to respect, to study, not to lie, steal, cheat (my answer is yes)... but in turn are you to tell them - instruct them - that there is an "almighty" when you cannot know for sure, in the same way you can know for sure that lying is wrong?
You teach them not to lie but it's ok to teach something as true which you cannot know for certain is true and accordingly lie or mislead them on an exemption they may find out the lie at college?

I dare say there is good reason to be aware at all times of inappropriate subtle influences brought to bear upon ever changing cultural attitudes. Just one of the most insidious of them happens to be the religious influence I think.
Plenty of people, especially young people, like to live outside the boundaries of cultural norms. Not fitting into expectations is what helps broaden tolerance. The eventual acceptance of some aspects of the more diverse or unusual lifestyles into cultural norms have also enriched peoples' lives. Cheer up, living outside the boundaries of cultural norms could be considered 'the thing to do'. It's fashionable. It doesn't need to turn one into an outcast from society completely. Perhaps it depends more on which kind of society you like to mix in.

Prove to me lying is wrong ? That's subjective and why is it not ok to lie? Cheating? it's not cheating, its getting an edge that is all...a lot of these values are based in a belief in god and his commandments.....And why would you make the assumption that i cannot say for sure there is no god? I know for sure there is a god....I speak with god and he speaks to me....just because you do not speak nor hear him does not mean he doesn't;t exist...It's the old question of a tree falling in the forest...did it make a sound? 20 people may have been standing there and heard it make a sound, but since Stu wasn't there are we to believe it didn't;t make a sound or is it better to assume that it made a sound but Stu never heard it?? getting back to the things to teach our children, lying, cheating, fighting, adult, stealing, killing, ......I challenge you to prove beyond a doubt that any of those activities i just mentioned above are wrong without citing society rules or religious rules.....why is it WRONG if i lie??? i might hurt someone feelings??? so what, why is it wrong? why is it wrong to steal? survival of the fittest correct?
