Not sure I understand your entire post, but I'll give it a go. The public follows, they have no choice. Cutting edge money managers(not dinosaurs) and more than a few members of this community lead. The public generally gets slaughtered by following. These are the facts.

To borrow a phrase--where are the customers yachts? Do you know anyone who invested with JWH recently? Are they happy with the results? Do they care that he is super rich? People seem not to understand that it is the clients making money that matter.... the wealth of a fund manager is periphial and really has little to nothing to do with the returns the clients earn.

In addition, do you really think these "gurus" of the market are really going to tell everyone how they do it? Deception, my friend, is the calling card of the true predators. Don't you know that the royal hunting grounds are always forbidden??

well, with all this hububub about the demise of the trend followers, please note that the great trend follower non believer Nassim Taleb recently placed his fund into receivership. Really really poor form, particullarly for a firm that said they could never ever ever blow up.
