Well, I kind of hate to get into this, because I feel I've done a pretty good job of not getting "preachy", but the quick answer to your question is the Holy Spirit. I believe, as do all Christians that I know, that the Holy Spirit has drastically altered my personality and behavior.
I mean I can definitely say that I am a very, very different person from the day I became a Christian. Of course, I know you would argue that that is the day my "self-deception" began...
Again, this assumes no interaction of God with man. You are assuming God cannot or will not get involved personally with an individual human being...

More huge, huge assumptions here. When I was involved with the occult, I knew (and still know to this day) that there was a spiritual reality to what I experienced. I WAS using my head then. I had absolutely NO question that there was a spiritual/supernatural side to life on planet earth.
Now, as a Christian, I have experienced a 100X more of these supernatural/spiritual experiences. You simply cannot talk someone like myself into a naturalistic viewpoint.
As I told Axe, you cannot tell a Navajo skinwalker that there is no spiritual side to life. You cannot tell one of the lamas that there is no supernatural. For that matter, you can't even tell Mick Jaggar that there is no spiritual aspect of life. They all know better.
There is a spiritual reality behind the Navajo skinwalker, the Dalai lama, the Satanist, the occultist and the Christian in Communist China.
I submit that it's not a question of whether it's there - it's a question of who is right.
