Good to know Jeantel. It's good to hear from an expert linguist in black slang. Oh wait. Are you sure about that Jeantel?
----
In the third part of Piers Morganâs extensive, exclusive interview with Trayvon Martinâs (girl) friend Rachel Jeantel about her testimony in the George Zimmerman trial, the host asked his guest if there was anything she wished sheâd said on the stand. Jeantel answered with one word: âNigga.â
Jeantel explained to Morgan that âthe whole world say itâs a racist wordâ but the version of the word that she testified Martin had used in reference to Zimmerman, spelled ân-i-g-g-aâ doesnât mean what most people think it means. It doesnât mean a âblack maleâ as Morgan assumed, she said, but rather any kind of man, including âChineseâ for example. Morgan helpfully pointed out that thatâs the version rappers use in their music.
âBut nigger,â Jeantel said, stressing the â-er.,â is a âracist word.â She said âIâd advise you not to be by black peopleâ when you say that word, Jeantel explained, âbecause theyâre not going to have it like that.â And this is not just in her community as Morgan posited but in the entire âgeneration.â
Jeantel was clearly attempting to illuminate a conundrum that has plagued media coverage of race, not just during the Zimmerman trial but for decades, begging the question, does America need another CNN special on the ân-word?â
