I started watching Hillbilly Elegy a year ago as Amy Adams and Glenn Close were in it.

I think I got as far as him dressing down his new bosses at dinner and felt it was just too dumb/Hallmark.

But it was touching that he saved Mitch McConnell when his shell was broken from that nasty hillbilly boy.

I don't need to watch the rest to get the criticisms I've seen recently. Hillbillies are poor because God prefers decent people etc.

i learned in 2016 it’s poor peoples fault they are failures. Same with soldiers who died defending America.

Yes, all Vance* did was revive Oscar Lewis' "Culture of poverty" theory that got popular in the 1960s. Saying impoverished behavior preferred by individuals is the reason they are poor and structural problems were caused by laziness.

Well he applied it to country folk when it was mostly about urban before.

Well there are similarities but isn't Calvinism based on divine predestination, God made you poor, run with it and be obideient etc. hard work, thrift.
Lewis said you are poor because your culture sucks but could change your stars?
