Journalist and social commentator Ed West wrote in the UK Telegraph yesterday how struck he was by the Japanese culture throughout this ordeal. He observed how supermarkets cut their prices in the days following the quake and how vending machine owners were giving out free drinks as "people work together to survive." And West was most surprised by the fact that there was no looting.

India is an interesting case. they have Africa type poverty and are very low on the list, yet there are so many hyper intelligent indians who dominate academically and intellectually. I read somewhere that 36% of scientists in NASA are indian and 38% of doctors in America are indian.

india being 61 on the list is a huge blow to the credibility of this book. basically, poverty = lack of intelligence according to the author.

hmm..it appears the NASA and Doctor percentages are wildly exaggerated. it didn't seem possible...

but still, indians do disproportionately well academically which in my opinion is a serious blow to the study.

I thought about that last time too but then i read the patterns of migration are different for Indians as compared to other ethnic groups, many of the Indians who have migrated to the USA are already highly educated with degrees. Certainly most of first generation Indians migrants I know already have degrees from India or Europe. Whereas for the Chinese and other aisan groups like the Koreans, many of the migrants were poor and uneducated, opening takeaways etc, and its their sons and daughters who later go on to college.

Moreever, India suffers from a huge brain drain issue, if you are somewhat qualified, have a degree, you most probably want to leave the country. This is also due to their British colonial heritage, their command of english which allows them to fit into anglo countries easily. For places like China, there is a language barrier and also historically and culturally, the Chinese intelligentsia did not like to leave their homeland. In Imperial times, one of the worst punishments in Chinese law for treason and other heinous crimes was to be sent into exile into Central Asia or some remote SE-asian Island, for many this was a fate worse than death.

As the smart Indians leave India, there is a greater and greater IQ divide between the native Indians and the so called NRI's(non-resident Indians)

The richest Indian in the world, lakshmi Mittal, lives in london. The richest Chinese in the world, Li kah shing lives in Hongkong.

You are not considering the size of Indian population. There are (obviously) very smart Africans but the percentage is relative to the average IQ number. Also Indians seem to be favored by universities in the US and also by companies, there are nationalities that are less accepted (for example, Arabs). These Indians aren't just regulars, they are the cream of the crop - there is an extremely huge poor and relatively unintelligent population group in India which brings down the average.

Unless my TV screen was lying to me (I'm quite sure it wasn't) I did see one huge difference and that was the amount of black people that seemed to be out of control.

Let's invite the Japanese out of their soon-to-be-radiation-impregated land and ask them to move to Detroit. They can revitalize the city, revamp the old auto plants, build some Toyotas, Hondas, etc., and pay us some taxes so we can afford to keep paying them their bond coupons. They can clean up the lake and stock it well with eels or whatever things they liked to eat at home. Detroit will have the best school test scores in the US--everyone will be clamoring to move there. Add some nice, hard-working people who don't commit crimes to the US. Kill about 6 birds with one stone.

the real problem in the US today is the fading of the work ethic. it is a rotten environment when you can work for six months and then collect unemployment for 2 years. while unemployment benefits may not suffice for a family it is adequate for individuals. even for families it can suffice since they will qualify for free medical benefits in many cases. the old saying idle hands are the tool of the devil applies to both the US and much of europe.

If this would have happened in the USA, you would see rioting and looting.
