The basics of putting togther a pc are quite simple altho you do need to be aware there are some specific problems that are quite difficult and may require some research to figure out.
The advantage is that you can get a much more powerfull pc if you buy parts offline from companies for the same price that you would if you just walked into a store and and bought an already built one. Also if you have preferances you can get exactly what you want.
When I built my computer it cost me about $1800 to get togther. if i bought it in a store it would have been upwards of $2500.

I think before MS stops supporting WinXP I'll go ahead and do one more clean install and mirror the OS disc, and/ or create an image of it, so I can have clean reinstalls for life without worrying about MS not having SP2 available in the future if I need it.

You can also splipstream the latest SPs. Basically you copy the XP CD to your hard drive and apply the SPs. You can even add your drivers (like SCSI). Then burn a bootable CD with the new installs. When you use the new CD, you'll also install all the stuff you added. No need for long painful waits while installing all the fixes after the OS. Plenty of info on the web, just google slipstream XP.
