Egypt aid waiting to enter Gaza after Hamas declares truce

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AFP) â A convoy carrying a million dollars of Egyptian food and medical aid is expected to enter the Gaza Strip after Hamas agreed on Monday to a 24-hour unilateral truce with Israel to allow it in.
An official in El-Arish, 30 miles (45 kilometres) from the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, said the aid had been waiting there since Sunday but had not been allowed in because of Palestinian rocket fire.
The aid can enter after Hamas official Ayman Taha said the Islamists and other armed factions in Gaza accepted "a calm for a 24-hour period following Egyptian mediation in exchange for the delivery of aid from Egypt."
Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki told AFP that "we asked both both parties to create a suitable atmosphere to allow an Egyptian humanitarian convoy from the Egyptian Red Crescent to enter Gaza in security."
"The two parties dealt with the Egyptian request in a positive manner," he said.
Tensions have risen in and around the impoverished territory since the expiry on Friday of a six-month Egyptian-mediated truce between Israel and Hamas, which seized power in Gaza in June 2007.
The Israeli army has since carried out several air strikes, killing one militant and wounding several Palestinians, and militants have launched several dozen rockets into the Jewish state, wounding a handful of people.
The five-truck aid convoy, carrying 40 tonnes of flour, 20 tonnes of rice as well as medical equipment, will enter Israel via the Karem Abu Salem crossing (Karem Shalom in Hebrew) and from there go to Gaza, the official said.
"We have finished the procedures on the Egyptian side and we are waiting to finish procedures on the other side," Ahmed Urabi, head of the Red Crescent in northern Sinai, told AFP.
"The aid should be going in either some time this evening or tomorrow morning at the latest."
Israel responded to violence that erupted around Gaza in early November by tightening its blockade of the territory and blocking deliveries of humanitarian aid and other basic supplies.
The aid-dependent land of some 1.5 million people has been subject to Israeli blockades and repeated raids since Hamas seized power in the enclave in June 2007.
UN human rights envoy Richard Falk earlier this month compared Israel's policies against Palestinians to "collective punishment" and a "crime against humanity."
Israel subsequently barred the UN official from entering the country.
