Quote from Random.Capital:
Why have such complicated systems?
Base tarriff rate on all imports, from all sources. Base VAT on all purchases. All other corporate/personal "income" taxes eliminated. Rates determined by how much people want to spend.
States and locals can pile on with additional VAT and/or property taxes at their discretion, free movement of people will (more or less) ensure things don't get too onerous.
Done.
Quote from toc:
Total elimination and transferring taxes to consumption should at best be applied first to a small secluded state like Alaska or Hawaii.
yeah, but I don't like hitting people up when they are just starting out. Especially the young couple that figures out they could do better buying a washer and dryer instead of going to the laundry mat. You want them to pay all their taxes up front. I want to give them some time to get on their feet.Quote from Random.Capital:
*Everything* is, ultimately, a consumption tax.
It's about time to acknowledge this basic reality, and collect what we want to spend at the simplest collection points. Namely, ports and cash registers.

The new law figures an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and so encourages the ounce of prevention.
Quote from riskaddict:
...Why can't healthcare facilities just be deemed utilities. ...
so how do you fix that? we all bitch about it, we all know it is a problem. How do you fix it? and make it right?Quote from trefoil:
That's the normal model when inelastic demand meets private ownership, followed for electricity, water, nat gas. Health care has a huge built-in lobby that's against this, including corporate employees with good plans that are taxpayer-subsidized and who make up a big fat juicy voting bloc that both parties pant after like drunk & horny teenagers at a strip joint; that's the only reason it's not treated as it should be.
