Considering the long history of religions imposing their values on people we should be very concerned that a religion in the modern era that supports Sharia law, the abuse of women, honor killing, etc. is gaining significant influence and imposing its values in your western country.

The same would apply if a bunch of conservative Christian nuts tried to impose their values on my community. It is unacceptable.

It's not the same thing at all. This is, or at least was, a Christian country. Islam is an alien psuedo-religion. We don't have to apologize for favoring Christianity, in the same way we didn't have to apologize for favoring democracy over communism.

We have some local bible-thumping Christian nuts who believe that women should be submissive and stay in the home, evolution should not be taught in schools, everyone not in their sect is going to hell, and many other twisted beliefs they want to impose on my family. Fortunately our local government does not allow their absurd values to be imposed on us... Any more than they allow Sharia law to be imposed across the community. There is a difference between worshipping as you please and imposing your values on others.

It isn't extremism at all. It is basic Islam and killing the 0.1% of them who are active jihadists will do *nothing* to stem the tide of violence and intolerance.
